Nerea Borreguero Muñoz
Born in Madrid, Spain, Nerea Borreguero Muñoz studied Biology and specialised in Cell Biology.
She began her research career in Developmental Biology laboratories, using Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism to investigate the cell signalling pathways underlying epithelial integrity and insulin signalling. This work was carried out at the Centre of Molecular Biology Severo Ochoa (CBMSO) in Madrid and at ETH Zurich.
Driven by an interest in how extracellular signals are translated into cellular responses, Nerea pursued a PhD at the Francis Crick Institute in London, focusing on the interplay between Insulin signalling and the Hippo pathway—well known for its role in cancer—in regulating cell growth and proliferation in response to mechanical cues.
After completing her doctorate and motivated by the translation of research findings into healthcare and societal benefit, Nerea transitioned into the biotechnology industry, specifically the medical device sector, working in R&D to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment monitoring technologies.
Currently, Nerea is a Senior Scientist in R&D at Abbott Laboratories, where her work focuses on biowearable technologies.
Outside of work, Nerea is involved in science public engagement activities, aiming to make science more accessible to society, and draws inspiration from her scientific background for design and art.
