Nicola Bermingham
Dr Nicola Bermingham is a Senior Lecturer in Hispanic Studies at the University of Liverpool. Her research lies at the intersection of sociolinguistics, educational linguistics, and Hispanic and Lusophone linguistics, with a particular focus on the contexts of Galicia (Spain) and Cape Verde.
She is the principal investigator of a British Academy-funded project entitled “Monolingual Schools in Multilingual Societies: rethinking language and education in Cape Verde,” which explores ways to ensure inclusive and equitable education in multilingual, post-colonial contexts.
In 2020, Dr Bermingham was appointed as the Hispanic Studies representative for the University Council for Languages (UCFL), where she promotes Hispanic Studies within Modern Languages in the UK. She also served as Chair of the International Association for the Study of Spanish in Society from 2017 to 2023.
Dr Bermingham’s editorial roles include Editor of the Modern Languages Open Linguistics Section and Assistant Editor of the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies. She was appointed to the AHRC Peer Review College 2022, supporting the allocation of arts and humanities research funding in the UK. In 2021, she joined the UKRI Early Career Researcher Forum, providing Early Career Researchers with a voice in policy and decision-making.
Dr Bermingham has published widely in journals such as the Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development, Language, Culture and Curriculum, and the Journal of Immigrant and Refugee Studies.
