Venue Info

Day 1: Opening Ceremony

On Friday the 21st of June, the Opening Ceremony will take place at the Frederick Douglass Building on the Helix Science Square (NE4 5TG). The building was named in honour of Frederick Douglass, a 19th century reformer born into slavery on a plantation in Talbot County, (Maryland, USA). He became one of the most famous intellectuals of his time and visited Newcastle as part of a lecture tour. The story of his visit was featured in Freedom City Comics, a collaboration between comics artist-writers and academic researchers about the history of civil rights on Tyneside. The comic was produced as part of a city-wide programme of events to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dr Martin Luther King Jr being awarded an honorary degree by Newcastle University.

If travelling directly from the station, you may want to get a taxi from the taxi rank located outside the station. Alternatively, you can book a taxi in advance through one of the local taxi service companies.

The University rooms booked for the Symposium are located on the ground, first, and second floors, but the building is fully accessible and includes a lift and accessible toilet facilities.

During the registration process, you will be asked whether we need to make any additional amendments to guarantee your attendance and participation during our Symposium. Nevertheless, if you have any questions or concerns regarding accessibility before and/or during the symposium, please do not hesitate to contact the Symposium’s Organising Committee.
